13 Lessons For Relationship-Driven Agents

In real estate, more relationships = more sales. The agent with the most connections will generate the most high-quality leads.

Here are 13 ways to rethink our approach to relationships.

  1. The work you put into the relationship isn’t always directly proportional to the value you extract. But if you don’t put in the work, you’ll get no value.
  2. Initial traction always comes from relationships. If there's a lack of production, you need more friends.
  3. A genuine compliment is your ticket to the ride. A compliment with an agenda is a death sentence.
  4. People know when it’s transactional. Try to conceal it all you want; they’ll still know.
  5. If you seek praise, they will give it to you, but they will like you less.
  6. The most damaging thing to a relationship is incongruence.
  7. If someone’s doing business with you but doesn’t like you, they are in too deep with you. You may get a deal, but you'll never see a referral or repeat business.
  8. When the value is the relationship itself, they’ll buy, and you’ll have a friend.
  9. If they give you their hard-earned money, hold their hand in the early days. Once money is involved, how they feel about you is up for debate. Treat them like gold.
  10. Helping someone you like is one of the most fulfilling acts. If you’re likeable, people will want to help.
  11. Follow the 40/60 rule. Speak 40% of the time; listen 60% of the time. Don’t just talk, listen. But don’t just ask questions, engage.
  12. The irony is that people want connections, but most don’t initiate – because they fear the person won’t want to connect with them, but the other person wants relationships, too.
  13. People want to feel smart and successful. They want this more than your service.
