8 Ideas From Seth Godin on How To Be Successful

Seth Godin's marketing techniques focus on taking the bland and making brilliance. As arguably the most influential marketing thinker of our time, he knows a thing or two about growing a business.

Here are his 8 most powerful ideas (adapted for real estate)

  1. Narrow your focus: Name a solo top-producing real estate agent without a geo-farm or specialty. They rarely exist. Next, name a top-producing agent with 10 different lead-generation strategies. It doesn't happen. Swing your hammer at a few nails to see results.
  2. Survive the dip: Everyone faces initial motivation followed by a dip, where our business and motivation slows. This happens with new agents starting their careers and experienced agents trying new strategies. Never expect results in two months. Zoom out and expect them in two years.
  3. Be a purple cow: Every real estate market is saturated, and every social platform is crawling with agents. Copying them is a sure way to get lost in the noise. Take a stand, have a different opinion, and aim for uniqueness.
  4. Share your story: Focus less on sharing tactics. Focus more on sharing stories. And please stop sharing your Canva collage of the homes you sold over the last month, quarter or year; these are the most disliked posts by consumers. Sales aren't a number. Each sale is a person with a story.
  5. You're playing too safe: How many posts are you not sharing because you're scared? How many events are you missing because you're scared? Almost every agent is playing it too safe. The cautiously tip-toe around instead of standing out.
  6. Stop overcomplicating it: What are we being hired to do? When you distill down an agent's job, we're being hired to solve problems. Know your job and do your job well.
  7. Be a Linchpin: This is a person who can't be replaced. Build your skillset and knowledge so much that the consumer needs you, and they'd be unwise even to consider using another underqualified agent.
  8. Quieten the lizard brain: We all play it safe, are boring, and avoid risk. We all have the same outdated operating system. The difference between the successful and the disappointed is that the successful don’t let it stop them. Don’t let your mind hold you back.
